Safety Instructions for Through-Hull Fittings (Scuppers)
Safe Usage Guidelines

Purpose
Through-hull fittings are designed to effectively drain water from the deck or interior of a yacht to the outside and to allow water intake from outside.
Use the scuppers as intended—do not block their flow or use them for other purposes.

Installation and Use
Pre-Installation Check:

Ensure that all components of the through-hull fitting are complete, clean, and free from mechanical damage such as cracks or deformation.
Before installation, inspect the installation site for structural damage or leaks in the hull.
Proper Installation:

Install the fitting according to the manufacturer’s instructions, using appropriate sealants (e.g., polyurethane sealant or adhesive) and tools.
Ensure the fitting is securely and watertightly fastened to prevent water from leaking into the yacht.
Perform a leak test after installation by pouring water around the installed area and checking for leaks.
Maintaining Scupper Flow:

Regularly inspect the scuppers to ensure they are not clogged by leaves, dirt, sand, or other debris.
Clean the scuppers manually or using gentle tools to avoid damaging the surface or seals.

Pre-Sailing Check:

Ensure that the through-hull fittings are clear and properly fastened.
Inspect the seals for visible damage, aging, or leaks.
Periodic Maintenance:

At least once per season, inspect the condition of through-hull fittings:

Seals: Replace seals that show cracks, brittleness, or loss of elasticity.
Material: Verify there is no corrosion (for metal fittings) or structural damage (for plastic fittings).
After the sailing season, clean the scuppers of residual water, salt, and debris.

Do Not Block the Scuppers:

Ensure the scuppers remain clear and unobstructed by equipment, ropes, trash, or other objects.
Blocked scuppers can cause water accumulation on the deck or in the hull, creating a risk of overloading the yacht and loss of stability.
Monitoring During Sailing:

During a voyage, ensure proper drainage and water intake through the scuppers. If issues arise, inspect their condition and flow.
Avoid Mechanical Damage:

Be cautious not to hit or load the scuppers with heavy objects, as this may cause cracking or loosening.
Emergency Situations
Leaks Around the Fitting:

If you notice leaks around the through-hull fitting, take immediate repair action:

Identify the source of the leak.
Apply temporary sealing measures, such as waterproof tape or sealant adhesive.
After returning to port, perform proper repairs and replace the seal or fitting component if necessary.
Cleaning and Storage

Regularly flush the scuppers with clean water to remove salt, sand, and other residues.
Before winterizing the yacht, thoroughly dry the scuppers and inspect their seals and tightness.

If damage to the through-hull fitting or its components is identified, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center. Avoid unauthorized repairs that could affect the fitting’s functionality.
